In the world of food, there’s something irresistibly nostalgic about traditional Indian desserts. The aroma of warm ghee, the sweetness of jaggery, and the crunch of roasted nuts can transport us back to childhood. But what happens when these timeless recipes get a healthy, contemporary twist? That’s exactly what Megha Bhatara, a passionate mompreneur, has accomplished with her venture, From My Kitchen. Through her innovative brand, she brings the goodness of homemade Indian desserts to families looking for nutritious yet flavorful alternatives.

The Journey to Holistic Living

Megha’s journey began around eight years ago when a few members of her family experienced health challenges and allergies. This was a wake-up call that led her entire family to reevaluate their lifestyle. As Megha recounts, “We consciously transformed our lifestyle, focusing on exercise, sleep, and nutrition—not diets, but nourishment.” A vital part of this transformation involved revisiting the family’s relationship with food.

Her personal commitment to nourishing her family sparked a remarkable journey in the kitchen, especially when it came to her son. “My son, who turned 8 this year, has never tasted packaged biscuits, candies, or even cold drinks,” she shares. Instead of depriving him of treats, Megha made it her mission to create healthier versions of desserts and namkeens, free from refined sugars, preservatives, and any artificial ingredients. This mission led to the creation of From My Kitchen, a brand that embodies love, health, and a commitment to holistic living.

The Influence of Tradition

Megha’s creations are deeply rooted in the rich culinary traditions of India. Drawing inspiration from recipes handed down by her grandmothers, she carefully experimented to give these time-honored desserts a modern, healthy twist. She explains, “I grew up with the recipes my Nanis and Dadima made at home in Madhya Pradesh. Over time, I also incorporated dishes I loved when visiting friends from other parts of India—Sindh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Punjab.”

One example is her Besan Fudge, where she opts for besan (gram flour) ground at the local chakki (mill) instead of smooth, commercially processed flour. “It’s grainy, and that texture is reminiscent of childhood treats,” she says. Similarly, she reinvented Ragi (Finger Millet) Flour Sweets, which bring out the nutty flavor of this wholesome millet, making them a hit with kids and adults alike. Other popular treats include Halwas loaded with dry fruits and nuts in desi cow ghee, and colorful Modaks in innovative flavors like Red Velvet, Paan Bahar, and Kesar Pista—without artificial colors or preservatives.

Meeting the Demands of Healthy Eating

In an era where processed foods dominate supermarket shelves, Megha’s mission to provide clean, nutritious desserts resonates deeply with health-conscious parents. “We can’t isolate ourselves from society or our immediate ecosystem,” she notes. The rise in diet-related diseases and the changing dietary patterns in India have made it imperative to offer alternatives that are both nutritious and delicious. A 2020 study published in The Lancet revealed that the average Indian household consumes more calories from processed foods than from fresh fruits, highlighting the need for a shift toward whole foods.

Megha’s answer to this growing demand is simple yet profound: From My Kitchen is all about using whole grains, natural sweeteners (such as desi khand, jaggery, dates, and figs), and desi cow ghee. The brand avoids refined sugar, additives, artificial colors, and emulsifiers—ensuring every bite is as wholesome as it is indulgent. “We use only the best ingredients, sourced ethically from partners who share our values,” Megha adds. Transparency is a cornerstone of the brand, and every product is made with the same care and attention that she offers her own family.

The Balancing Act of Motherhood and Business

Running a home-based business while raising a family is no easy feat, but Megha has found ways to make it work. “Balancing any home-based business and motherhood can be crazy!” she admits with a laugh. Yet, she’s learned to navigate the chaos with a few key strategies. She prioritizes her to-do list, schedules work around her son’s school hours, and groups tasks for efficiency. “And I couldn’t do it without the support of family and friends,” she emphasizes.

Like many working moms, Megha has faced her fair share of challenges—self-doubt, time constraints, and the ever-present “mom guilt.” However, she’s come to embrace the messy, imperfect journey. “I remind myself that I’m role-modeling entrepreneurship for my child,” she says. Her advice to other mompreneurs? “Start small, grow slowly, ask for help, and celebrate those small wins.”

A Sweet Response from the Community

It’s no surprise that From My Kitchen has garnered a loyal following, especially among parents who want to provide their children with healthier alternatives. Megha’s Ragi Ladoos are a particular favorite with kids, thanks to their rich cacao flavor—without any added chocolate. “Parents love that they’re super healthy, and kids are obsessed with them,” she says. Other bestsellers include her traditional Halwas, which serve as perfect prasadams during pujas and festive occasions, and Besan Fudge, a nostalgic treat for many North Indian parents.

For Diwali, Megha introduced two new showstoppers: Truffles—an innovative twist on traditional gujiya and kaju katli—and Almond Chocolate Fudge, which combines the flavors of rose petals, honey-sweetened gulkand, almonds, and dark chocolate. The response has been overwhelming, and From My Kitchen is fully booked for the festive season. Also making a debut are our nutrient packed flavourful, vegan and gluten-free namkeens. Completely roasted with a dash of oil used only seasonings, they are full for satiating protein and digestive spices - From My Kitchen currently offers wholesome protein packed makhana chivda and jowari chivda, a guilt-free sweet and spicy savory that pairs up well with chai, coffee and milk.

What’s Next for From My Kitchen?

Looking ahead, Megha is excited about the possibilities for From My Kitchen. As winter approaches, she plans to experiment with warming spices and ingredients that bring comfort during the colder months. “We’re always looking for ways to nourish both body and soul with wholesome desserts,” she shares.

However, with the rapid growth of her business, Megha is also focused on maintaining the personal touch and quality that has become synonymous with her brand. She’s exploring collaborations with corporates and establishments while ensuring that her core values remain intact. “Scaling is always challenging, but we’re committed to staying true to our roots,” she says.

From My Kitchen stands as a beautiful example of how tradition, health, and innovation can coexist, offering a taste of nostalgia with a modern, nutritious twist. Megha’s journey proves that it’s possible to indulge in desserts without compromising on health—a philosophy that resonates with today’s conscious consumers.
